Staycation - Day 9

A Night at the Opry

I would show you pictures, but they're pretty blurry.  We were in the nosebleed seats - there were only three rows of seats above ours.  Scary up there.

We saw:
John Conlee
Ray Scott
The Whites
Connie Smith
Mike Snider
Lauren Alaina
Larry Gatlin (it was his birthday today!!)
Bobby Osborne & The Rocky Top Express
Canaan Smith
and
Reba.

Reba sang a couple of songs off her new CD, and then some old favorites - Fancy, Is There Life Out There and The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.  I hadn't heard that song in a long time.  It really is great.  Just in case I've convinced you to give it a listen.....

That song was written by Vicki Lawrence's husband.  Vicki actually recorded it, and it went to number one on the charts for her, and 20 years later Reba recorded it also.  It is a classic.

And, not surprisingly, she got a standing ovation at the end of the night.

Another great Opry show.

The Grand Old Opry - June 3

What a great show at the Opry.  Although, truth be told, I've never been to a bad show at the Opry.  There's always such a variety of music performed by wonderful artists, that it's always entertaining.  Andy and Jenn were with us and we had a great time.  Here's who we saw.

Terri Clark - who celebrated her 10th Anniversary as a Member of the Grand Ole Opry.  She puts on a great show.  I think it must be difficult to be the first artist, but she does such a great job of opening the show.  Last time we saw her she did an acoustic set.  That was also a great show.

Jennifer Nettles - formerly of Sugarland, who was making her solo debut on the Opry.  Personally I'm not a fan of hers - I'll just leave it at that.

Charlie Worsham - who I had not heard of.  Great performer, really plays to the audience and has a variety of musical styles.  He was also playing outside at the Opry Plaza Party.  We have seen so many up-and-coming acts on the Plaza.  He is surely one of them.

Bill Anderson - Whisperin Bill they call him.  He's a fabulous songwriter, LOVES to perform, and we have seen him frequently at the Opry.

Josh Turner - who doesn't love that deep voice!!

The Oak Ridge Boys - I love the energy that they bring to the stage.  We have seen them before and they always come out and make the audience feel like there's nowhere else they'd rather be.  And, of course, they played Elvira!

Trace Akdins - who seemed a little shy at first, but warmed up nicely and is always fun to see.

Carrie Underwood - Blown away by her vocals.  She's a born superstar and, fortunately for her, she has found her way into the hearts of millions.

It was quite a line-up.  A fun show, and a pleasure to be there!!

Opry Plaza Party

We went to the Opry Plaza Party last night - mostly to get out of the house for a while. I had Thursday and Friday off from work, but unfortunately, it was a very rainy holiday weekend. So by Saturday night we needed to get out and do something. Anything!

So we braved the mall traffic and went to the Opry House. This is Blue Mother Tupelo, or BMT, or Ricky & Micol Davis:

My first thought was that she could lose the moomoo and put on a real dress. But that's not very nice, so then I thought well, maybe that's her style. He has kind of a Zac Brown look going on. Whatever. I've been cooped up in the house for three days - maybe I'm just kind of cranky.

I had never heard of Blue Mother Tupelo, but their website says

"it's Tupelo, honey - the songs blend N'awlins-style blues with spare Appalachian acoustic grit, Southern Rock grooves, 60's flower-power dreaminess and rootsy rock."

Yup, that about sums it up. I think they should pick one. There's just way too much going on. It feels like they're trying to include all of those musical styles into each song.

They both have great voices. He plays the guitar and the dobro and she plays keyboard. They have a bass guitarist and a drummer. All the pieces are there, they could use a little refinement. It you want to listen to them, here is one of their videos. Grab a snack and get comfortable - it's pretty long.

One of the other 'entertainers' on the plaza was Pee Wee. Get it - stilt walker, pee wee.

Anyway, he was trying to get everyone to give him a high-five.

I gave him a high five - down low of course!!
