Happy Memorial Day!

This is the day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Hometown heroes like William F Hitchcock, who was a Private First Class in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He died on April 15, 1969 at the age of 24 from a grenade explosion. He was a teacher at my elementary school - their playground is named in his memory.

And Petty Officer Second Class, Tyler Trahan, who died just over four years ago. He was just two days short of his 23rd birthday, killed while conducting combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was the same age as my son. I can't imagine the heartbreak of losing your son.

So today, while you are celebrating an extra day off, some nice weather, good food with friends and family, remember to give thanks for those who gave all. And to the Gold Star Families who honor and miss them everyday
